Freedom from something can open the door. It cannot tell you what freedom is for.

About the book

More than a decade ago, Trent Goodbaudy began asking who has the authority to govern you. That inquiry became Freedom From Government and years of examining coercion, consent, jurisdiction, responsibility, fear, and personal freedom.

But the questions did not stop at government.

Freedom From turns the same attention inward. What happens when the visible cage opens, but identity is still organized around the cage? What happens when resistance becomes an identity, certainty becomes an obligation, independence makes receiving help difficult, or yesterday’s conclusions begin governing today’s choices?

This book does not ask the reader to become obedient, abandon skepticism, or pretend coercion does not exist. It asks something harder: What if the inquiry wasn’t finished?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Freedom From about?

Freedom From examines what can remain after external authority is questioned: internalized rules, identities, fears, obligations, and old conclusions that may continue directing a life long after the visible cage is gone.

Is Freedom From a political book?

It grows out of questions about authority, coercion, consent, and freedom, but its central inquiry is personal rather than partisan. The focus is on recognizing the forms of authority that can operate inside us without force.

How does this relate to Freedom From Government?

Freedom From Government asked who has the authority to govern you. Freedom From continues the inquiry by asking what happens when external rulebooks stop providing the answers—and whether some of those rulebooks have already been carried inward.
